Partial Wave Spectroscopic (PWS) Microscopy To Probe Sub-Diffractional Nanoscale Architecture Of Biological Cells Prof Vadim Backman The members of the Backman lab have developed partial wave spectroscopic (PWS) microscopy to probe sub-diffractional nanoscale architecture of biological cells. This technique has found a number of significant applications such as in cancer biology (the technique helped identify alterations in the chromatin structure in the earliest stage of carcinogenesis that occur universally across many types of solid cancers) and cell biology (studying the role of chromatin remodeling in transcription). However, currently, the technique requires cells to be fixed, which prevents studying dynamic processes in live cells. The goal of the MS project is to develop an advanced modality of the technology, which would enable imaging live cells.
